The US Department of Education recognizes 6 distinct educational regions, each of which is overseen by a different accrediting body. The North Central Region covers the largest geographical area, comprising community colleges in the 19 states of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. The quality of community colleges and their programs in this region is monitored through accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS).
